The Spirit Within

After covering the AIDS crisis for several years through various magazine assignments and personal work, Scott Thode was drawn to the question of how people deal with the disease on a spiritual level. In 1992, he began The Spirit Within, a project which involved shooting portraits of 40 persons infected with the AIDS virus from across the United States. His subjects then wrote about living with AIDS.

Drawing on friends, contacts and subjects from different AIDS-related stories, the portraits were shot over a period of several years and during the course of other assignments. A selection of that work is presented here with audio narration. The male voices are read by Mr. Thode and the female voices were read by Jeremy Peterson.
