Hello, fellow Avedon fans. I knew almost nothing about him until I was in a photograph he took for his election project, this past August 26th (a photo of the "Billionaires for BUsh"). Now I'm discovering his amazing talent for the first time. It was a remarkable event to be there in his studio. He was so overflowing with energy! It is impossible to believe that when I met him he had only 4 weeks to live. He had an amazing way of connecting with people instantly. When he spoke to you, he made you feel like you were the only thing in the universe that mattered to him. He gave you his total attention. And he somehow took all of us sweaty protestors and made us look absolutely fabulous! He showed us the photo afterward, and he was almost jumping up and down with pleasure. I hope it will be in the New Yorker before the election, as planned, so I can see it again. I adored Richard Avedon immediately. I just wanted to hug him, and I wish I had. I miss him very much.

I´ve just heard about Avedon's death on TV and I come to visit his website. Avedon was a genius recognized all over the world.
This Master will be missed for ever.

Twenty-six years ago I saw his 30 year retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and was inspired to change my career and become a photographer. I wanted to make photographs like I saw on those walls. I just found out he died of a brain hemorrhage today, 10-1-04, at 81 in San Antonio, TX, while on assignment for The New Yorker. I am profoundly saddened by this news. He was a giant for me! This shot of Twiggy, along with the shots of John, Paul, Ringo and George, defined the sixties! He never used Photo Shop!

This image say more about the Colorific, drug-inspired, lightshow enhanced, playful aspects of the 60's than it does about it's subject. Come to think of it, those aspects ARE the subject! Twiggy just happened to have been present.

"Twiggy" by Richard Avedon is my all time favorite print by any photographer. The way he captured her was a way that no one will ever be captured in again. He brought about another sense of beauty that had not yet been shown through any photograph. This is an amazing print and Richard Avedon's amazing technique's were shown through this.

Everyone seems to have an opinion about this. Everyone wants to say something happy.

Is this not an example of using an effect where it does not add in any way to the image. Stick to the basics, they work better

I Love your lighting and composition but I like your stuff better without the special effects.

The movement of her hair and off-centered face personify the sycadelic nature of the sixties. Bravo!

Rachel

This is timeless. We know it's Twiggy and that makes it sixties but it is not about her "twigginess". Her shape is not being exploited here. It is about energy and light, about the presence of this woman, Leslie Hornby - and about Richard Avedon's ability to share that with us. It is inspiration for all time.
