In 1995, I accepted a small commercial assignment to photograph a brochure on Steinway House, a community home for foster children in Queens not far from where I was living at the time.
Attracted in part by my own experience in a single parent household, I returned in January of the following year to begin a 4 month project photographing the children at Steinway whose world I could not help but be drawn into. Last year I returned once again to collect audio for this presentation on Journal E.
All of the children in the story are still in the foster care system. They have either moved into foster families or are living with a member of their family known as kinship foster care. None have yet been adopted.
