Some of the children at Steinway
have been legally removed from their families because of drug or alcohol
abuse among the parents, domestic violence, child abuse, or a combination
of all four problems.
Before coming to Steinway some of the children lived in foster homes
and some were briefly hospitalizedin psychiatric wards because they
were dangerously violent to themselves or others.
One such child at Steinway attempted suicide two years ago at the age
10, by deliberately running in front of a speeding truck.
