As always, the PDN Photo Annual represents a year in pictures. From Thomas Dworzakís heart-wrenching images
of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and David Gillanders' distressing look at the lives and deaths of forgotten
street children in the Ukraine, to Art Streiber's quirky portrait of a "40-Year-Old-Virgin" and Jeff Barnett-Winsby's
unique story of prisoners making unlikely friendsóit was a year of natural disasters, harsh realities, familiar faces
and small triumphs. This issue recognizes the photographers who captured every frame.
Our deepest gratitude to all the judges, photographers, designers, editors and agents who participated in this
issue. Also, a special thanks to our sponsors—Canon, Epson and Nikon—whose continued support for photographers
and their work makes the PDN Photo Annual possible. Each year, these companies, along with Parsons The New
School for Design, have provided cash awards, prizes and scholarships in recognition of humanitarian efforts,
storytelling and creativity.
Be sure to vote for your favorite image in each category. Each category contains a voting section where viewers can select a favorite image; overall voting allows viewers to choose the top images of the whole site. The site tracks votes with cookies, allowing only one vote per visit. Voters can then return to see the results of the voting and how their choice compared to the totals.
