By Wednesday evening the wind had shifted to the south as the fires continued to burn, blowing smoke and ash over much of Manhattan. The view is strange as well because of the silence. With the exception of the occasional siren, there was no traffic in lower Manhattan, and the skies are clear of commercial aircraft. The sound of patrolling military jets dominated the scene.
