the days following the September 11 attacks, ordinary Americans
tried to respond to the tragedy by donating their money and time
to charitable groups. They also tried to band together through the
most common symbol of the United States: the American flag.
W. Keith McManus found evidence of these feelings in the rural areas
around upstate New York.
