Alex Chadwick:
You get a lot of drunks in this town, don't you?
Timothy
Rolewicz: Sure. It's a party town. We
get a lot of people who kind of run away from life. They just can't
handle it.
When a bunch of police officers go to one of their friends' house
and have a party, they can maybe get a little drunk and be a little
silly, or, if they went out in public or something, they'd hear
about it. You know, it wouldn't be good.
Melvin
Richards : This place, Juneau Wharf, is a living room for people
who have dropped out of what's north of us. You know, when I left
home, as it were, and my ex said to me, "Where are you going to
go?" I said, "I hadn't thought about that." At the time we were
living in Maine. And I thought for a moment, and I said, "I think
Key West this time." She said, "They deserve you, asshole."
Alex Chadwick: (laughs)
Melvin
Richards: But we're good friends - you must understand
that, we're grand friends.
Pat Timmons: I work here as a bartender. It's a standard
work bar. I opened up as the original morning bartender. They used
to open at noon. I started to open it up at 8:00 ...
Alex Chadwick: Eight in the morning?
Pat Timmons: -- in the morning.
Alex Chadwick: Did you serve beer to people?
Pat
Timmons: Oh yeah.
Alex Chadwick: Yeah?
Pat Timmons: We have coffee
up until 10:00, and then we put the coffee pot away, and then it's
Bloody Marys, Mimosas.
Alex
Chadwick: And beer.
Pat
Timmons: Beer. Liquor. Whatever.
Alex Chadwick: It's not yet 11:00 in the morning, and ...
Mr: I've had six already. (laughs) I don't know who put the
time limit on when you're supposed to start drinking beer, but they
didn't come from here. People here start ... there's some places
open 24 hours.
Alex Chadwick: Yeah.
Pat Timmons: But you can't
serve from 4:00 in the morning until 7:00.
Alex
Chadwick: Really?
Pat
Timmons : You have to close for three hours. Somebody's
got to sweep up.
Alex Chadwick: Yeah. Do people ever worry about a drinking
problem here?
Pat Timmons: We've got no problem.
(laughs) You drink. You fall down. You get back up. There's 217
bars in this town.
Alex Chadwick: Really?
Pat Timmons: If you aren't
an alcoholic when you come here, you will be when you leave.
Alex
Chadwick: Well, don't you worry about anything, like,
you know, what about the future?
Pat
Timmons : (Laughing) -- what -- what ...
